Many hip hop heads have had their ears on the ground
listening for word on a movement that represents the core of underground hip
hop in all its forms in South Africa, and the streets responded with silent
whispers. In response to the hunger of the masses for the resurrection of the
underground hip hop scene in all its elements, Back 2 Basix and Free Unlimited
Creatures of Knowledge Entertainment (F.U.C.K Entertainment) have put their
heads together and created a channel in form of an event called The Basement
Raps Core, which is a portal for the underground hip hop movement to rise and
claim its rightful place back on the streets.
The Basement Raps Core is an event which is a channel that
saw. a gap in the market to highlight the alternative underground hip hop scene
on the streets of South Africa which has been shunned by the mainstream media.
This event aims to house a melting pot of all the elements of underground hip
hop which branch out from the rap music on the DJ sets to artists MC’ing
on stage, graffiti, freestyle battle rap, B Boying, hip hop gear stalls, and
lovers of this alternative lifestyle sharing knowledge and punch lines and
having a good time. Bringing this movement back to the streets on such a large
scale, The Basement Raps Core wants to create financial benefits for the
artists whose crafted arts contributes towards growing the movement I n the
country and beyond the borders, by creating a networking link between the
artists who perform at The Basement Raps Core and independent media forums,
giving more exposure to the artists, attracting larger numbers of crowds and
paying artists at the events so that they too can have commercial benefits in
the underground world.
Back 2 Basix who have partnered with F.U.C.K Entertainment
are hosting their launch event of this movement on April 6 2013 at 15:00. The
damage is R10 before 17:00 and R20 after at a place that has a true underground
dungeon feel called Breakaway Nite
Club(www.breakawayniteclub.wozaonline.co.za) Cnr 39 Koch Street and Claim
Street, Johannesburg, opposite Gateway Lodge/ Mariston student Lodge near
Joburg Art Gallery. The venues other greatest asset is that it is convenient to
transport. It is just a block away from Noord Taxi Rank, there is a Rea Vaya
bus portal just near the club, and it is also close to park station and also
just a walk away from Bree Taxi Rank.
For more information check out the Basement Raps Core
Facebook event page “Back to Basics: Rap Core” for regular updates or contact Anti
Bullshit on WhatsApp: 079 823 5017, BBM: 2A52A4DF. The Basement Raps Core is a
real hip hop event for real hip hop heads and if you have ever complained about
the hip hop on mainstream media then you have no excuse not to be at this real
raw raps event. This is the beginning of the take over of the underground.

GIG REVIEW===>>> RHA'S EARTHDAY DANCE
Written by Talenta Maluleke
Photography by Nyiko Baloyi
On the second of March we proceeded to Soweto (Mzimhlophe) to checkout Rha's Earthday Dance. We got a bit lost along the way and had to deal with Law enforcement but we eventually got there and it was all worth it. DJHerbal
Illohim quickly graced the decks and blazed the dope Dubstep sounds which set
the mood to dancing mode, although as he was playing there wasn't much of a
crowd but he surely got us vibing nevertheless.
Next it was Smash upon the decks and as soon as dancehall
started playing, we saw the crowd get live as body movements were creating
a scene of dancing ecstasy. His
selection was on point and got me moving to the bass. If you were looking to
accessorise Yellow Man had all the dope merchandise to go along with your
outfit and personality. Suddenly there was a burst of life in the hall and it was
packed. Then Shelektor Zee-Skull blessed us with some soothing earthsrong ragga
and reggae tunes - bless up to her it was a dope set. With Shephard Stulla
mceeing the show everything was on point.
Next up was Tandaring Dawta who made it even hotter. I
like her style of selektion with a fine set of blazing dancehall tracks making
the women wind and dancefloor shake. NC Dread blessed us with a fair
live performance although I must say the Madibuseng Firelady touch (the
dancer) was a nice one - much respect. DJ
Pepe set the floor on Fire, lookout for him. I think he's on his way
to the top and I think its fair to say he set the standard for the night. Then it
was Benji Dread with a live performance.
Next up was the man himself DJ Fanta, nobody bad like this man he done killed it with some earthstrong
mixture of reggae and dancehall sounds which got us loving the vibrational
waves coming through the speakers. Next up on the wheels of steel was Dj Pilzy
Lee. She came through and blessed us with some hard dubstep core tunes. She got flava for days - much respect. My personal favorite for the
night, DJ CoppaShot came onto the stage and started turning things around with hard raw dancehall tunes. I lie not when i say
he's set was one of the realest that night with his technical mixing skills and dope track selection abilities.
Much respekt to the masses that came through! Large up to
Rha, DJHerbal Illohim and the Audiotopsy team. Emagazine First, Its first class
all the way!!!

ARTIST PROFILE===>>>PHO'NETIQ (SA)
Photography by Nyiko Baloyi
Pho’netiQ aka Pharoah Pho' (real name Motau Tshepo Ngoasheng) is a young cohesive spiritual revolutionary underground Hip Hop Emcee and an activist from Polokwane, Limpopo Province. His style is of complex lyrics & delivery, internal and multisyllabic rhyme schemes that challenges the listener’s intelligence. The Unique Selling Point about him is that even though he is not recognized by many, he has a strong command of his music.
He started writing raps early 2008 as a crew member of Da Carnivores alongside Ryder better known as Da Capo, who is currently a house DJ/Producer and Brian better known as Brinco. Pho'netiQ was only interested in higher education when he moved to the Vaal in the Gauteng Province in 2009. Freestyling back of the cafĂ© at V.U.T and performing at local poetry sessions and various hip hop shows, this started to build his street credibility. With his passion and desire for hip hop this young man managed to get his skills recognized by most and as time passed DisMental Thee Axemple of One-2 noticed the boy’s potential and introduced him to Dig It Deep Production.
Performing around the country, He got himself sharing stages with South Africa’s most respected artists such as Last Days Fam (East Rand), Golden Shovel of Optical Illusion (Vaal), Beat Oven (Pretoria), Cryogenic (Vaal/PTA), Zakwe (Durban), Zeeko (Free State), One-2 (Vaal), The Soil, AKA (JHB), Projektah (JHB), Mothipa (Vaal), Liquid KZN (KZN), Revivolution (JHB), Ntja Pedi (Vaal), A_Huge_Impakt (JHB), Baleloko (Vaal) and many more. He also had an honor of getting a spot to share the same stage with an international rap icon Copywrite of MHZ from Columbus, Ohio alongside Naked eYe on the 3rd December 2011, the same day of the release of his first project titled “Beginning of a New Era (Street Soul UnMixtape)” consisting of 17 tracks.
Being his own songwriter, he worked with various super producers such as Instro of Motif Records, Cyrus Beatz of GSF, Tempo Beatz of We Make Music, Frost Beatz of A Huge Impakt , Naked eYe (The Beat Bender), Eyecon of Dig It Deep Productions and many more. The project got him a lot of buzz in the game and was rated the best underground tape to come out in 2011 in the streets.
Him and Naked eYe representing Dig It Deep alongside We Make Music crew toured Swaziland during the festive season of 2011 promoting the Vaal To Swaziland Mixtape and both Beginning of a New Era and Catharsis by Size Killa. They left the country going crazy with the singles from all the projects on radio rotation and had mentions on the Swazi Mirror and Times of Swaziland newspaper which happens to be the biggest news reading paper in the country.
He later formed a clique with his close friend Antidote (real name Themba Robert Ndinisa) and together they call themselves A&P (Antidote & Pho'netiQ) and they released a Free EP December 2012 titled "True School Preservation Free EP" which serves as a prelude to the official EP of this dynamic duo coming out December 2013.
