‘’You’re brave”,
were words uttered to me as I breathlessly forked together the last bits of the
legendary ‘Kingston on 4th Cheese Burger’. My last meal for 2012 had
to be one fit for a King, as the night ahead would prove to be ‘madd’.
Rudebwoy
Sphola opened up the floor upstairs and without delay had us moving to the
illest beats. Two floors meant two times the pleasure and that is definitely
what I experienced. Although the constant movement between the floors was
proving to be quite some exercise, it meant my New Year’s Resolution of
exercising kicked off earlier than anticipated.
Cardinal had the
small yet intimate crowd downstairs bumping and grinding to fine dancehall and
reggae tunes. Duo Danceholic switched it up a lil and had us
equally at the palm of their hands with their selection.
Towards the
countdown to 2013, Nok had us putting our “Lighters Up”, a song by rapper Lil’
Kim which was produced by her ex-boyfriend Scott Storch and released on the 31st
of August 2005. Soon after that “Slew Dem’’, by Capleton which has become an
anthem at the Dancehall & Reggae events I’ve attended was played.
Rightfully so, it is the one song that instantly uplifts my mood and has me
attempt to dance.
Other Selectas who
graced the floors were Zee Skull, Mystical Ebony, Gaza Skull (who played a set
just as blazing as the outfit she wore), Tandaring Dawta, DJ Pepe and Guesst DJ.
Guesst Dj was
saved for last, understandably. At that time I was just about ready to go home
and drained from the eventful night, all which seemed to have faded now. His
technique of mixing is unique, to say the least, he’s a pioneer. He played
reggae beats and made them sound futuristic. A first class set in my records.
Kingston
on 4th was the place to usher into 2013. If you could not make it we
hope the gallery of pictures by Nyiko Baloyi gives you a glimpse of what went down.
