HOME COMING - THE BEST OF SKYZOO -- MIXED BY DJ ZAKES THE MIXMASTER

With the Hip Hop Explosion upon us that has been dubbed the most anticipated Hip Hop event in JHB we see true development through a collaboration facilitated by UPE (Urban Phenomenon Entertainment). Doug (UPE)the companies director was approached by Dj Zakes to do a UPE Mixtape to highlight the events done by the company in 2012 and to also use it as promo for the Hip Hop Explosion happening on the 3rd at Zula Bar in CPT and on the 4th  Baseline in JHB, Doug then took it a step further and proposed to Skyzoo that he do a mixtape with the Mixmaster and Skyzoo agreed. Doug then pulled in C-Live as marketing tactic for radio as he is on 5 fm. On the tape we see Dj Zakes mix side A of the Mixtape and C-Live Mix Side B of the Mixtape. This eliminates all speculation that artists that come in from the states only come in to the country to take and never give back. The tape also serves as a motivation for young people wanting to expand their networks beyond S.A  so they see that international collaboration are not far fetched.

GIG REVIEW : THE BASEMENT RAPS CORE UNDERGROUND HIP HOP EVENT

The homegirls and homeboys showed up in their numbers for the pure love of Hip Hop.
On the 6th of April 2013, the Basement Raps Core gig came to life. The venue, rooted in Mariston, proved a little hard to find - taking us half an hour to do so. On entering what seemed a pub, we were fascinated by the crowd which composed of heads who had travelled to be there and others who were clearly there for the use of the bar only.

The atmosphere thick with smoke and drink, bodies moving to the hypnotic sounds.
Although the joint wasn't exactly crawling with women, it wasn't quite a guys only event like all the other underground Hip Hop gig. Ladies came out to show love.

Apart from the not so impressive sound system due to some technical difficulties, heads were bopping, feet tapping to the tunes of Mind Apocalypse, Yugen Blakrock, Witchcraft, Robo The Technician (from Iapetus), Revivolution and Anti-Bullshit, with Articulate Artists opting to go at it acapella. Apart from what was a dope lineup, the sound system couldn't put the real hip hop heads down.

On the decks were Systamatic and Dj Break Bread, to name but a few.
All in all, it was a good night like any other to be out. Peace to Hip Hop and her sons.
