WORD N SOUND POETRY AND LIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL 2011 (EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH EMAGAZINE FIRST)

EMAGAZINE FIRST: Word N Sound, what's the history behind it?
WORD N SOUND: Word n sound was started 12 months ago as there were no prominent and consistent poetry platforms within the Jozi CBD. We started in a small studio with an initial plan of attracting 40 people per show. After 4 shows we had to move to a bigger venue as the response was overwhelming. We now attract an average of 300 people per event with the monthly shows. Now we are hosting our first festival.

EMAGAZINE FIRST: What can we expect from the Word n Sound Festival?
WORD N SOUND: The Word N Sound Poetry and Live Music Festival will be a life changing experience as it explores the relationship between words and sounds. Various styles of poetry will be showcased, from spoken word to slam, while intergenerational collaborations will be bridging the gap between the old and the new schools.

EMF: How long has it been running for?
WNS: The project has been running for 12 months as monthly shows and this will be our first festival.

EMF: What makes it different to other poetry events?
WNS: Quality poetry and performances are at the centre of our mission. Our honest and consistent audience all add to the experience thus we are able to stage a well rounded quality event. We are always thriving to push to boundaries and by challenging artists to do so, our events improve month on month.

EMF: Who can we expect to see there, any famous acts?
WNS: The legendary Tu Nokwe will be opening our evening program with Kgafela oa Magogodi as the headline act for the main event titled “#POETRY IS! Other performers include AE Ballakisten, Mak Manaka, Phillippa Yaa de Villiers, Myesha Jenkins, Vallentine Kekana, Lilly Million. For a full line up please visit
www.wordnsound.com . There will also have the word n sound open mic finale where five finalists will battle it out for the open mic champion title and a trip to baltimore.
The TUNGFU Poetry Slam will see 3 crews duel words for an oversized floating trophy and R6 000 in cash. Likwid Tongue VS The MissinGap VS Tower of Thought, its going to be epic.

EMF: Should poets bring our poetry books?
WNS: Unfortunately we will not have an open mic slot for our audience at the festival. Our monthly open mic shows will resume in February 2012.

EMF: Anything more to add?
WNS: Please join us on facebook to keep track of the event and daily activities leading up to the festival.
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=267595773283252

EMF: Were do we go for additional information?
WNS:
www.wordnsound.com

EMF: How does one participate in your events?
WNS: Our monthly events will resume in February 201 at the Concowan Theatre University of Johannesburg. Anyone is welcome to participate in our open mic slot by simply signing up at the event.

EMF: Who is bringing us The Word N Sound Poetry and Live Music Festival 2011?
WNS: Although the monthly events were self funded, the festival is proudly sponsored by AE Ballakisten (a poet and arts entrepreneur), Mageu No1 Smooth and GearHouse South Africa. Our strategic partners includewww.consciousness.co.za and WordsEtc Literary Journal

EMF: What revolution do you wish to bring to modern youth culture?
WNS: The creative industry is untapped and can liberate the youth from both mental stagnation and financial poverty. The creative industry can be a powerful tool in reeducating our communities and giving them a unified vision. Through the arts, the youth can demonstrate their abilities and contributions to society and help build a more creative and tolerant world. If I can contribute to this movement by creating artistic platform, then hopefully a revolution will be seen in our lifetime.

EMF: If The Word N Sound Poetry and Live Music Festival 2011 was a product, what would be its key selling features and benefits?
WNS: Quality, progressive, inclusive and a “shot of lemon straight to the brain”

EMF: Lastly, where would you say the standard of art and expression is in SA as compared to other countries?
WNS: I can proudly say that we are up there with the best in the world. We have talented and quality creatives and their work has carried our flag internationally. Where we need to improve is on formalising the industry so that young people can have an option of a literary or creative career. With more investment and support South Africa has the ability to become Africa’s biggest producer and exporter of creative products.

BRINGING THE SOUL BACK WITH QUEEN_DEEVAH

Full Name& Surname: Dembe-Tshilidzi Thakhathi
Alias: Dee/ Queen_DeeVah
Date of Birth: 21st January 1993
Current Location: Vincent, East London- Eastern Cape
Musical Genre: Soul; R&B; Folk; Jazz; Hip Hop; Fusion
Occupation: Student

Born in Polokwane, of Venda origin and raised in Tshwane. I have always had a love and zeal for the arts as a whole. Since crèche- finger painting, singing nursery rhymes, writing naïve poetry and being creative in all spheres of life always served a greater purpose for me and came from the heart. Ever since, my passion strongly prevailed throughout my school career. I continue to further my painting, sculpture, graphics& design and pottery skills at Belgravia Art Centre. Many different characters, genres, styles and talents impacted and influenced my character. I am a singer, poet, rapper, writer, actress, model, artist and dancer. My main focus being music (singing) and poetry. Hence I’m so determined to study, experience, break through and transform the industry with my skills. As artists such as Picasso, Erykah Badu and Lebo Mashile continue to inspire me, a plethora of influences drive my desire to constantly establish myself as a creative, versatile and innovative individual. I formed and created ‘’The Golden Platform’’ Poetry and Culture society at Hudson was Head Reporter and Head of layout at my school’s magazine- ‘’Tentrabis’’, one of the XL Magazine poetry competition winners, wrote 2 articles for Pretoria News as their youngest intern, and 1 of which made the front cover of the weekend paper and I am currently working on a book of anthologies. I was a part of the school choir, chamber choir and a 5- Part vocal ensemble called ‘’5 of a Kind’’. I was also the jazz vocal ensemble leader at school which has performed alongside jazz legends- Kesivaan Naidoo and Kery Hiles. The ‘’Jazz Voies’’ have also performed at the 2010 National Grahamstown Jazz Festival in the Eastern Cape. I was the female lead for Hudson Park’s musical theatre production; ‘’West Side Story’’ 2010, also obtaining colours for drama. I record when I have the time and write and conceptualize all my music. Not only have I performed on big and celebrated stages; But I believe I have become an inspiration to all people that have embraced my talent. I love performing at all types of events, and make it a point that I attend open mics, lyrical ciphers and being a part of undiscovered showcases where I can be one with many others that share the same talents and dreams as I do. Next year I will be based in Byranston, Johannesburg and will be studying a BA Communications Management- Specializing in Creative Branding at Vega. In the near future I plan on expanding my career in the arts, acquiring my own band, releasing my book of anthologies and a soul/jazz inspired E.P, performing, touring, collaborating, getting my name out there and ultimately promoting who I am and what I’m about. I believe that my love and dreams for the arts should be shared with society and later in life, the world at large. To inform, awaken, reach out, empower, motivate and inspire.. Every soul that has a voice to be heard. Not just to add value to my immediate environment; but to multiply the exceptional legacies embroided by generations of artists and musicians.. This isn’t just a part of my life- It has become my life.

HEAVY HITTERS PRESENTS COPYRIGHT(MHz/USA) LIVE AT GAUTENG HIP HOP EXPO 2011

Peter William Nelson (better known by his stage name Copywrite, also
known as Copywrite 78, C-write, or Copy) is an underground hip hop
artist from Columbus, Ohio. His ancestry consists of mixed Irish and Italian. He is a member of the Columbus crew MegaHertz (or MHz for short), Nelson emerged from the underground scene in 1998 along with his group "MHz" with a debut single on Fondle 'em Records, entitled "World Premier" b/w a... solo song by the late Tero Alexander Smith, better known to the rap world as "Camu Tao" entitled "Camu" own by Bobbito Garcia & later went solo due to DJ Mighty Mi not wanting to sign his group, "MHz". In 2000 he released "Holier Than Thou" with producer RJD2 on Eastern Conference/Rawkus Records.

His debut album The High Exhaulted was released on the Eastern Conference label to some praise, although some felt that RJD2's beats were too dark for Copywrite's persona. His second release, Cruise Control Mixtape: Volume 1, was released on the O.D.O.T. record label in 2004, rerelased on Nature Sounds in 2005 and featured production from Jake One, J-Zone, & the late, great Jay Dilla. Copywrite was one of an original members of the Weathermen, but left after personal disagreements with Cage.

I'm based in JHB since August, had been staying in PTA for the past 6yrs. I'm a part time promoter and until recently my modeling was full time but I've squeezed in an 8-5 job as a data capturer at a medical centre which pretty much takes up most of my time. I'm one of the faces of flash power energy drink, and I've appeared in 5music videos namely: mahoota: potoko soccer edition, theo kgosinkwe:ukhona, bojolution: do u knw, bofalo souljah: hot n tot, mckenzie: let's get together........ I've done a selimathunzi interview aired on the 5th december 2O10 and there's still more to come, for fun my girls and I go  for picnics and movies then to let our hair down you can catch us at hush, the bank or taboo atleast every second weekend.... That's me in a nutshell.

TIRHANI "FLOETIC" SONO BREAKS IT DOWN FOR EMAGAZINE FIRST

Tirhani "Floetic" Sono from Kempton Park.
TIRHANI-means work which is the best description when trying to explain who I am. Half Tsonga/Pedi 'Rhani' (Queen in indian). I am a very driven free spirited soul but also humble. Down to earth but unique in my own crazy way. Can be very random, not because I choose to be, but because I think it's a hidden gene that no one in the family has but me(laughs).
FLOETIC-I am a poet who expresses herself through writing not only about her experiences and current emotions but also those of other people close to her.
Many people don't believe it but I am super shy! I talk a lot though(laughs). LAUGHTER is medicine that keeps me sane. I grew up in Joburg my whole life.
I finished matric last year and I have been juggling varsity and doing part time work and promos.(Living up to my name!). I am currently studying towards a degree in BCom Informatics at Unisa (people are clueless about this course) which is my main focus. Through my busy schedule, I am trying to build my modeling career but I still make time for my loved ones. Future plans-Would love to be the best I can be, achieve more than a degree-study further. I have a few projects in the pipeline with a few friends from high school. Working on establishing something big but you will just have to watch this space!

EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Tay Malekele-FHM 2012 Models (MODEL 81)

EMAGAZINE FIRST: So....who is Tay?

TAY MALEKELE: Tay is a classy, down to earth lady. Fun and a lil crazy sometimes(smiles).

EMF: When and how did you know this is what you wanted to do?

TAY: Well I officially started modelling in 2009 and got signed with my first agency in 2010. I first found out about FHM top 100 last year this time when I saw the Top 100 2011 girls. And knew I’d want to be part of top 100 2012 and hopefully even top 10 FHM 2012 list..  Its been all hard work and all through God’s  grace everything has been falling into place.

EMF: What was the biggest highlight in your modeling career?

TAY: Up until now I’d have to say a wedding shoot I did in New town at a demolished building behind the Sci-bono centre... very artistic ... I liked that a lot!

EMF: Besides modeling, what other interests do you have?

TAY: Fashion, fashion and more fashion!!! I love to travel, a good work out at the gym and good music..

EMF: You are competing with 99 other beauties on the FHM 2012 Models competition. What would you say separates you from them?

TAY: Well 100 of us all have our own reasons for wanting to be part of top 100. With me, I always love a new challenge. Always try to aim bigger and better;  appreciate, learn and grow from every situation I’m in. Put in an extra 150% effort...  And ALWAYS put God first!

EMF: How far do you want to take your modeling career?

TAY: As far as it can get!!! ... Well I obviously won’t look like this forever(laughs) .. So right now I’m just grabbing every opportunity I get ...  and try to make the best of everything that comes my way.

EMF: Who is your biggest inspiration?

TAY: Marc Jacobs, Michel Adam, Gaby Aghion(Chloe), Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum , Jessica Stam, Gemma Ward
