TALIB KWELI LIVE IN JHB: Sprite Uncontainable Unleashes Top Six Finalists in Hip-Hop Talent Search

Johannesburg, 21 August 2012: After months of tight competition and a country-wide search, the Sprite Uncontainable Hip-Hop Talent Search has unveiled its top six finalists. Narrowed from a field of 18 who battled it out at the regional Sprite Rooftop Experiences last month, the two dancers, two emcees and two graffiti artists represent the very best of the best – the most Uncontainable hip-hop talent Mzansi has to offer.

The top six will be performing at the Sprite Hip-Hop Festival at OST on 1 September alongside Talib Kweli, American rapper and international judge for the talent search:

-        Graffiti:
o      Dokter (Durban)
o      Stop Dane (Durban)
-       Emcee:
o      HCL (Durban)
o      Aby Fab (Johannesburg)
-       Dance:
o      Costa (Nelspruit)
o      Sham Rock (Cape Town)

The epic regional Rooftop Experiences held in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg provided a platform for the top 18 talents to show off their Uncontainable talent on stage to the public and the judges, a last chance to convince the hip-hop community that they deserved the ultimate recognition. Based on these performances, a panel of local judges and the general public – via the website – determined the top six artists.

Those who make final selection to the top three have the promise of a trip to the birthplace of hip-hop, New York City, and a mentorship with Talib Kweli, something over which Dokter and Stop Dane are both bristling with excitement.

“New York is where hip-hop comes from!” Stop Dane declares. HCL (Hydrochloric) and Aby Fab, the two emcee finalists, also have their sights firmly set on the next round of the competition and a potential trip to the Big Apple.  “It’s where everything started. For a hip-hop lover like me, it’s like a hip-hop dream,” says HCL.

Dance finalist Costa is still in high school, but is determined to tough it out. He’ll be going up against the considerable talents of Sham Rock, the rose amongst the thorns as the only female finalists. She intends to put up a fight: “I really want this. I work hard and I believe you get what you work for”

“Congratulations to our top six finalists! I know that each of them will use this opportunity to open up serious doors in the hip-hop world!” says hip-hop enthusiast and Sprite Brand Manager Hlukani Rikhotso.

Fans of the top six finalists still have an opportunity to vote online for their favourite talent on www.spritehiphop.co.za. Then, on 1 September, the hip-hop community can look forward to the dope Sprite Uncontainable Hip-Hop Festival in Johannesburg. American rapper Talib Kweli will be in South Africa to perform and to help select the best talent in dance, emcee and graffiti.

UG Money is an afro beats, Rnb, salsa, hiplife and Rap Entertainer & Artist who enjoys doing music full time. UG was born into a half Nigerian family in the 1970's. He grew up in Europe, studied Economics and Business, but that remains as un-finished business to date. He love's sounds to bits, and can always relate to any kind of music. He has lived and traveled almost all the countries in Europe including the USA and Canada. UG Money never really had a chance to record any vocals because of his street life but things changed for the best when he was watching a clip on TV with friends, and said to his friend "I CAN DO BETTER THAN ALL THESE ARTISTS ON TV" and that was his word. In August 2010 he stepped up and recorded his first single titled "Money" which was nominated in the South South Music Awards (SSMA).
He is progressing with every Single and sharing stages with bigger artists like Kas fimile, 9ce, May D, etc. Since his first recording, he now has over a hundred songs already which were written by him. UG is currently working on his album, while he is touring and performing in Europe and UK.

ARTIST FEATURE ===> LIL NINO (USA)

Originally born in Columbia, South Carolina, NINO moved to
New Haven, CT at the age of three. Music is his profession
but it has not taken him out of the hood yet. He started his
music grind at the age of 14, which is also the age he
started hustling. He is what you call a product of his
environment. He's seen it all and been through it all,
the guns, drugs, women, that fast life to him was fascinating
until he started to go back and forth to jail!
..REAL TALK..

This music is his only hope and he's not turning back!
He has previously opened up show's with a long list of
artists such as Nas, Styles P, & Mobb Deep just to name a few
In 01 he went on a motown sponsered tour with Chicago's Cap-1.
Same year he appeared in the source magazine. He has also
been featured in numerous magazines in the states, with the help
of his Dj ( KRIME CLEARGATES) he has dropped over 100 mixtapes.

He's been trying to make it in the industry for years;
however, when it comes to artists from Connecticut it
seems as if they get the short end of the stick. Connecticut
is part of the tri-state as is New York and New Jersey but
some how they get skipped over. Hip-Hop's home originated in
the Bronx and much respect is due but for some reason CT
just can't get the respect that they deserve. There's a lot
of excellent artists there that are just not given the
chance. That has led him to the conclusion that if the game
won't come to CT then he'll bring CT to the game! Watch him!

"I'M BETTER THAN YA FAVORITE BY FAR!!!!!
AMERICAN DOT - I EAT LIVE & BREATHE THIS SHIT!!!!!"

BROOKLYN MEETS AFRICA

United Through Music(U.T.M)was founded by Envy, producer from South Africa and Prince Michael G. Vincent(Prinxmikul), emcee from Brooklyn New York who both met online and fell in love with each other's work and decided to hook up a collabo in late 2010. The first song was released online in early 2011 and caused a lot of buzz on social networks. Following that the duo thought they should work on a project where they get different indie artists/producers from all over the world to do a collaboration album, which will be released online. Only a few producers/artist bought into that idea, one of them being  Vez Scenestar, a local producer whom Envy has known for some time after  meeting  via the “beat tape inc tapes”. Vez Scenestar  was interested and was a fan of  U.T.M ‘s work so he contributed a beat, which turned into a song after Prinxmikul laced on it (Gun For Money). Following  the success they decided to do an album with Prinxmikul  as just two producers from South Africa and an emcee from New York and it will be called “Brooklyn Meets Africa”. This is history in the making, never in the history of SA hip-hop have South African producers produced an entire album for an artist from the US. The album will be released sometime this year, it’s the first Vol. because they have been working so much that they have enough songs for 3 albums and they are still working on more, but the first volume's done!!

THE SOCO SHOW --- QUEENS OF HIP HOP

We at it again and again providing you with another great show and as you all know Hip hop is a male dominated genre in which authenticity has been identified with masculinity. Female artists have traditionally faced many barriers in entering hip hop and have been marginalized as performers.

Despite this many women rappers have found ways to contest and resist the objectification and exploitation of women in hip hop culture. Many other women rap and rap soul artists have adopted an independent woman persona
which opposes misogynistic representations of women in hip hop.

Usually, a women’s value in rap music is as a back up singer or dancer (e.g. video hoes). Women have made a mark for themselves in the rap industry in the last ten years. It was then that women were given the recognition and respect that they deserved as an artist and lyricist. Female rappers use powerful lyrics in order to dispute traditional gender roles that are prevalent in our society.

Female rap music focuses on promoting women’s importance, which in turn demands equal treatment for women and demonstrates the need for women to support each other and build.

This month we are hosting Queens on the mic who’s hard work has been evident and uplifting for other sister in the game to keep on. These ladies are on this months issue of Hype mag and they proved that the movement is not all about Ninjaz, ladies got to eat too!

Its woman’s month and u must come check them out, show love and support them as they continue carrying the torch at The SoCo Show: Queens of Hip Hop ripping mics with a live band and doing wut the do best!
